Premiere of Vivian Fung's 'Fanfare for McElroy' added to ASO Masterworks season finale Friday and Saturday

 The Alabama Symphony Masterworks season finale has a fitting addition to its scheduled program on Friday and Saturday.In honor of retiring principal trumpeter John McElroy, ASO has commissioned composer Vivian Fung for a new composition. Titled "Fanfare for McElroy," the work will precede the three other works on the program — Debussy's Three Etudes, Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto and Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5.Fung, a Canadian whose works have garnered worldwide acclaim, was commissioned by ASO and orchestras in Germany, New York, California and Washington, D.C., to compose a new Harp Concerto, and she received the premiere of that work in a fascinating concert conducted by Music Director Laureate Justin Brown. Fung's "Aqua" was also performed on that concert.Read more about Vivian Fung.The concerts, which take place Friday and Saturday, May 30-31, at 8 p.m. at the Alys Stephens Center, will be conducted by Case Scaglione, the New York Philharmonic's associate conductor who is returning for his second visit to ASO.
