Program Note

Shaman Speaks is a lively work for saxophones or clarinets that derives its inspiration from Balinese chant and the interlocking rhythms associated with gamelan music.  It starts off with a low chant for the lower ensemble and then moves into an extensive section using fast interlocking rhythms.  After the culmination of these energetic staccato parts, the ensemble fades into a sea of key clicks.  The chant returns briefly at the end, book-ending this short work with an earthy atmosphere.

This work was originally scored for clarinet choir and a second version exists for saxophone ensemble.
