La Jolla concert series: Pictures at an Exhibition
Guest conductor Michael Gerdes leads a perennial favorite, Pictures at an Exhibition, composed when Mussorgsky was 35. That should have been the midpoint of a great career, but–tragically–he was dead only seven years later. LJS&C Young Artists first-place winner Carlos Aguilar plays Nielsen’s Flute Concerto, a very playful (and a very funny) piece of music. Vivian Fung offers her own set of “pictures” in a colorful musical response to works of public art from the 2015 Vancouver Art Biennale.
