Join us for the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players' 55th season on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 7:30 PM in the Taube Atrium Theater. Enjoy the West Coast premiere of Steve Reich's Jacob's Ladder (2023) and pieces by Ruth Crawford Seeger, Seare Ahmed Farhat, and Vivian Fung. Arrive at 6:45 PM for a pre-concert talk with Artistic Director Eric Dudley and composer Vivian Fung. For generations, American composers have endeavored for their unique voices to be heard, their ideas to take root, and their visions to rise. “Steps Toward Ascent” traces that journey through works that confront unrest, wrestle with fragility, and seek transcendence.
Vivian Fung’s Ominous (2024) responds to the turbulence of the post-Covid era and to personal struggles within her own family, confronting fragility and loss through music that brims with urgency and raw intensity.
Presented by the Presidio Theatre in celebration of the annual Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, The Del Sol Quartet and San Francisco Poet Laureate Genny Lim turn their gaze to the full moon, in a journey to find harmony with our ancestors and within ourselves.
Voices of mothers and daughters across continents and generations anchor this multimedia performance, featuring new poetry by Lim interwoven with new music and interviews by Chinese diaspora composers Vivian Fung, Meilina Tsui, and Theresa Wong.
Released in October 2023, The Jasper String Quartet’s Insects and Machines: Quartets of Vivian Fung will receive the Album of the Year Award…Insects and Machines is Jasper Quartet’s eighth album and the first commercial release of Fung’s first four quartets. It received notable critical acclaim, including from Strings Magazine that praised the album for its “intensely dramatic energy… demonstrating both their advocacy of new music and their transcendent mastery.”
