Present Music's 'Women in the Chamber' review

Present Music programmed music by nine women Thursday afternoon at the Woman's Club of Wisconsin, an apt venue for both gender and musical reasons. The second-floor hall is superb for chamber music but rarely used. While the sound worlds and styles of these composers differ significantly, at least on this program they demonstrated a common interest in economy of means. Brief but densely packed music was the order of the day. Several, but not all, of these women also showed a fondness and talent for antic wit."Snow" and "Chant" from Vivian Fung's Glimpses (2006), for prepared piano: A modern, adventurous take on Impressionism, with papery rattles and glittering pentatonic arpeggios charmingly suggestive of about 90 seconds of icy snow.- Tom Strini, Strini WritesThis Women in the Chamber program will be repeated at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 10-11, at Anodyne Coffee, 224 W. Bruce St. For tickets and details, visit the Present Music website.Read full article here.
