Dazzling instrumental display returned for Vivian Fung’s hugely challenging Sparks for yangqin, percussion, and flute, Shao’s virtuosic flute responding to the urgency of the yangqin and Wang’s vibrant drumming. Minimalist energy and a deep understanding of the instruments characterised this work, which was inspired by the ‘many movements of positive change and collective energy’ that somehow emerged from the current pandemic.
