The Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon oversaw the construction of the piece as curator—a catchall term that captures her roles as editor, consultant and headhunter.“The Sinfonietta knew they wanted to do this project with four individual movements based on architectural phenomena in Chicago,” says Higdon. “[Sinfonietta music director] Mei-Ann Chen came to me and said, ‘Can we make this work and can you suggest some possible composers?’ Higdon culled a shortlist down to four.""Each composer chose a building from a list by the Chicago Architecture Foundation to inspire their piece. The movements are:

  •  A Shelter That Filters the Sun, about the Modern Wing of the Art Institute, by Bayolo
  •  Aqua, about the skyscraper of the same name, by Fung
  •  Shards of Serenity, about Crown Hall at IIT, by Holland
  •  Open Air, about the Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park, by Rogerson"
